I’d like to put out two guidelines for anyone adopting this “link to myself” strategy:

1. Ensure that no more than 50% of the links on any page are to yourself. (Even this number may be too high.)

2. Ensure that the pages you create at those destinations are truly more valuable to your readers than any other external link you might provide.

“any Twitter client can now associate another post as a reply to another existing post. This means that Twhirl or TweetDeck can allow a user to post a normal status update, and provide a “+” sign underneath (or “@” similar to the Twhirl FriendFeed client), and a new post can be appended as a reply to the previous post.” louisgray.com: Twitter Implements Threaded Comments, Sort Of

“These new publishing platforms will power the social web of the future, but without tools to make all these disparate social graphs meld together, the people who are actually participating will become even more frustrated than they are today. The need for data portability is even stronger than ever, but we need there to be a clear winner in the game before our lives can improve.” The Next Social Networks Will Be Powered By WordPress and Movable Type - ReadWriteWeb

Fascist state censors Pirate Bay.

We’re quite used to fascist countries not allowing freedom of speech. A lot of smaller nations that have dictators decide to block our site since we can help spread information that could be harmful to the dictators.

This time it’s Italy. They suffer from a really bad background as one of the IFPIs was formed in Italy during the fascist years and now they have a fascist leader in the country, Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi is also the most powerful person in Italian media owning a lot of companies that compete with The Pirate Bay and he would like to stay that way - so one of his lackeys, Giancarlo Mancusi, ordered a shutdown of our domain name and IP in Italy to make it hard to not support Berlusconis empire.

We have had fights previously in Italy, recently with our successful art installation where we had to storm Fortezza in order to get our art done. And as usual, we won. We will also win this time.

We have already changed IP for the website - that makes it work for half the ISPs again. And we want you all to inform your italian friends to switch their DNS to OpenDNS so they can bypass their ISPs filters. This will also let them bypass the other filters installed by the Italian government, as a bonus. And for the meanwhile - http://labaia.org works (La Baia means The Bay in Italian).

And please, everybody should also contact their ISP and tell them that this is not OK and that the ISPs should appeal. We don’t want a censored internet! And the war starts here…

“Anyway, help us all get off the PR bandwagon. What are you passionate about? If you could go anywhere in the world and meet with any geek, executive, or company, who would it be? What are you finding is bringing real value to your life? Hey, even go outside the tech industry.” Scobleizer — Tech geek blogger » Blog Archive Cuil: Why I’m trying to get off of the PR bandwagon… «

How do I promote myself in an increasingly crowded market?

shabdar:

#1. Network! The first step (after establishing your service) is to network. I’m not talking about finding anyone you can and shove your web address down their throat- but find those in your field and befriend them. They can certainly help get the word out.

#2. Don’t make customers, make clients! Treat every potential buyer as a long term client. Provide them with the best customer service money can buy (and do that part for free!). Clients will provide more clients and word-of-mouth will get around!

#3. Obsess over what you do! Keeping up with the latest trends or tools of your trade can be tough but take time out of every week (or every day!) to read up on whats going on in your field. Knowledge is power, and the more up-to-date newsbreaking type of work that you do- the more the world will start to notice.

#4. Be unique! Don’t just do what everyone else does- you have your own mind and your own style… perfect it! Brand yourself! The more unique you are, the more you will stand out!

#5. If all else fails… advertise! Yes i know, a “duh” answer… but if you choose the right place to advertise and are willing to pry open your wallet, you can soon start making a name for yourself. The truth is, the more people see your brand or name, the more popular they assume you are… and remember, advertising doesn’t only bring in clients from that one advert but it brings clients from the one who’s seen your ad 20 times and brought it up in conversation when someone needed your service.
